Drawing the Burne Hogarth Method Classes

A Class for the Young, Impressionable, and Dedicated

Starting in Nelson B.C. Mid May

I am going to begin a 4 – 6 part drawing class centered around learning to draw the Burne Hogarth way. This will focus on utilizing the brilliant and insanely cool way of drawing dynamic figures from the imagination as taught by Burne. Our classes will entail working with Burne’s method and will be a self directed drawing class involving critical analysis, new techniques for drawing figures in deep foreshortening, and gaining confidence in drawing from imagination instead of from figure study. COMICCON POST MORTEM #4: The Writing Process Distilled

Comic Con Pitch Perfect

Writing Seminar with Marv Wolfman and Neo Edmund

I am finishing up the last of my ComicCon coverage here with my Post Mortem #4. Ironically this was probably the best panel for me and the last one I am getting to in the blog series. I think a big reason for this is I returned home from this panel and immediately started reworking a script based on the things I had learned rather than devoting time to talking about what was said.

It is very insightful to get a window on the writing process from people who are working professionals in the industry. I find when I read scripts by pro writers, or hear them talk about the process it is often a confirmation of the process, and equally a demystification of it when you hear how often other writers and creators struggle with similar issues and challenges.

Marv was the main guy on this panel, he really laid out a careers worth of information in a short 1 hour. Continue Reading »

ComicCon Postmortem #3: Getting Press

Early morning in beautiful San Diego as I approach Comic Con for the first time

How to Get News Coverage

moderated by Rik Offenberger (First Comics News, Archie Comics)
Panelists include Holly Golightly (BroadSword Studios), Laura Hudson (Comics Alliance), Rich Johnston (Bleeding Cool), Kiel Phegley (CBR), Chris Thompson (First Comics News), and J. C. Vaughn (The Scoop).

For all you short attention spanners I am still blogging about ComicCon!

Attracting Press Coverage was a panel held with some of the top bloggers and news folks. The focus was exclusively on promotion of your work by submitting your project press release to various news and comic resource sites on the net.

ComicCon Postmortem #2: Pitch that Story

Comic Con Pitch Perfect

Pitch Perfect

Moderated by Andy Schmidt (Comics Experience founder, former Marvel and IDW editor) panelists John Layman (Chew) and Mike Costa (G.I. Joe: Cobra)

My notes on these panels are by no means complete. I will do my best to touch on some of the highlights of information that I found really helpful, as well as paraphrase some of the ideas, humor, and general cool that came across.

The Pitch Perfect panel was my favorite simply because it touched on so many aspects of putting your ideas together for a publisher, and I possessed so little knowledge on the subject.

Lets Get Started

Pitch the premise not the plot: A lot of time writers submit pitches that are about from A to B in the story and what happens. Publishers want to hear what the story is about in as few lines as possible not necessarily the plot. (There is a lot of confusion about plot versus premise which was clarified during the writing panel I attended. I will get those notes up in a blog post in the next week!)

ComicCon Postmortem #1: The Event

Early morning in beautiful San Diego as I approach Comic Con for the first time

Well my first year ever at Comic Con has come to a close. I went for 2 days to see what it was all about and begin my entrance into the Comic Industry as a creator.

It was really a soft launch for me. I met some creators and asked questions about their work and some of the things they are doing I talked a bit about the work I am engaged in but didn’t plug hard or glad hand the hell out of everybody. Continue Reading »

Part 1 of 3 – Bad Writing Habits to Eliminate

Part 1 of 3 – Bad Writing Habits to Eliminate

I have a confession to make. It’s about some of the things I do that don’t make me a better writer. I hope this series of confessions, and the disciplines I have begun working with can benefit anybody else suffering from the same bad habits.

Switching Mid Task is Bad Bad Bad

Writing is a momentum based task for me. Getting started takes time and accelerates slowly. Over the course a writing session or several days I will increase my speed efficiency and overall focus on the task of writing. One of the bad habits I have identified is changing tasks in the middle of the writing process.

It breaks the flow, takes the steam, momentum, as well as focus away from writing and robs the creative process. This includes doing things like checking email, reading news, blogs, and the most credible yet dubious distraction of all Research!

Page 12 Illustration Process Time Lapse

God Favors The Rebel Page 11 Time Lapse illustration sequence

Moving into the final 3 panels I decided to do a time lapse on the final full page panel of the comic. This probably took me about 6 hours in total with a few breaks. I did do some preliminary work using the light box to take some of the general shapes off of page 1 as they are similar in layout and book end the final work together.

I hope you enjoy! Continue Reading »

Learned Lesson: Balancing Panel Art & Text

Page 4 Rough Layout of Panels 1 & 2

I started hitting up edits on the Script again. During the grant writing process I did for Xeric Foundation I decided to do a quick and dirty mock up of the pencils with text bubbles and narration box placement all in an effort to get a sense of how the lettering was going to play out.

It was illuminating in that I realized some of the script was just to text heavy and wouldn’t even fit on some of the panels. This has led to a reassessment of the dialogue and narration elements of the script, and ultimately a draft 10 of the script! Continue Reading »

The Best Laid Plans… etc etc.

Banner for the best Laid Plans post

Well some of the steam has let out of the GFR project over the last month. With a huge work load and a sudden wild card discovery that I have to move has led to the decision to back off on the “Printed by Comic Con” goal and give myself some more time over the summer to complete the project.

I would really have liked to show up with the final comic in hand but with all the new life events  the crunch to finish the comic would entail to many compromises in the inking, coloring, and lettering stages. With that said I am still going to Comic Con and will be promoting the project and the Remyth Comics website as well. Continue Reading »

How about a Wrathful Goddesses Panel

A seductive yet wrathful Kali Deity stands guard of the coming changes

It’s been a very busy couple of weeks around here with Remyth Comics. A big part of my process at the end of March was directed toward getting everything ready for submission to Xeric Foundation for grant consideration. (I am currently writing a more detailed blog post to go over my process with this so keep checking in!)

A seductive yet wrathful Kali Deity stands guard of the coming changes

A seductive yet wrathful Kali Deity stands guard of the coming changes

In the meantime I thought it would be nice to do a straight up panel reveal from page 9. This occurs at a point the poem which is culminating toward spiritual resolution.

In the poem the narration that goes with this panel is:

POEM
whose boundless eyes would look simultaneously…
